Project Overview

More than a deck — an outdoor living space

This South Jersey homeowner came to us with a clear vision: a backyard that could genuinely be used year-round, not just during perfect weather. They wanted low-maintenance materials, thoughtful lighting, shade overhead, and a finished aesthetic that felt like an extension of their home — not an afterthought bolted to the back of it.

The site called for a multi-level design that could accommodate a covered porch area alongside an open deck, each with distinct materials and details that would still feel cohesive as a whole.

Where craftsmanship shows up in the details

The composite decking was installed with hidden fasteners for a clean, fastener-free surface. A contrasting dark border board frames the perimeter, giving the deck a finished, furniture-quality edge. The white PVC railing system runs the full length of the open deck, with a stair section dropping down to grade — all anchored by post bases that sit flush and clean against the decking surface.

The covered porch ceiling is the project's showpiece. Dark-stained tongue-and-groove cedar planks were installed horizontally across the entire underside of the roof, with flush recessed lighting flanking a statement matte black ceiling fan. It's the kind of detail that turns a functional overhang into a room.

  • Hidden fastener deck installation

  • Dark perimeter border board

  • Illuminated post cap lighting

  • Stair railing to grade

  • T&G cedar porch ceiling

  • Recessed lighting + ceiling fan

  • White PVC / black aluminum contrast

  • Weather-rated for all seasons

Year-round living, zero regrets

Rain or shine, this backyard is usable. The photos were taken on a wet spring day — and the deck still looks magazine-ready. The composite surface sheds water cleanly, the PVC railing won't rot or chalk, and the covered porch means the homeowner can enjoy the space even during a summer downpour.

More than that, the project added genuine living square footage to the home — a true outdoor room with ceiling, fan, lighting, and views into a lush South Jersey backyard. The kind of project that pays back in enjoyment every single season.
