Project Spotlight: Custom Composite Deck with Aluminum Railing & Cocktail Rail
The Vision
For this project, the homeowners wanted to create a backyard space that felt clean, functional, and built to last. The goal was to replace a basic outdoor area with a thoughtfully designed deck that would improve both the usability and appearance of the home while remaining low-maintenance for years to come.
A key priority was combining durability with elevated design details — creating a space that looked custom-built while still being practical for everyday use, entertaining, and family time outdoors.
What We Built
To bring the vision to life, we constructed a 20’ x 12’ elevated deck featuring a 4-foot-wide staircase, designed for both functionality and long-term structural performance.
The deck structure was built using 6x6 pressure-treated support posts, a triple 2x10 beam, and 2x8 joists framed 12 inches on center, creating a strong, durable foundation engineered to provide long-term stability while supporting a premium composite finish.
For the decking surface, we installed Deckorators Voyage Costa composite decking accented with a Dark Slate picture frame border. The combination of the warm Costa decking and darker border creates a clean, custom appearance while adding subtle contrast and definition around the perimeter of the deck. The picture frame detail gives the space a more finished architectural look and elevates the overall design.
To complete the space, we installed RDI Avalon black aluminum railing paired with a Dark Slate cocktail railing, adding both modern style and everyday functionality. The aluminum railing provides a sleek, low-maintenance finish while maintaining durability and unobstructed views of the backyard. The wider cocktail rail creates a functional surface for drinks, décor, and entertaining while tying together the darker accent tones throughout the project.
For added safety and convenience, we also installed a gate at the top of the staircase, providing an additional layer of security while maintaining a cohesive finished appearance.
